Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria but the problems caused by this natural disaster are only part of the story. St. Mark’s invites you to join us for two forums that examine how U.S. colonialism and economic policy has led to and exacerbated the Island’s current crisis.

Nelson A. Denis

Nelson Antonio Denis is an attorney, author, film director, and former representative to the NY State Assembly, representing East and Spanish Harlem from 1997-2000. As the editorial director for El Diaro La Prensa, Denis published over 300 editorials and won the “Best Editorial Writing” award from the National Association of Hispanic journalists. His Op-Eds have appeared in the NY Times and he frequently appears on TV news programs. His recent book, War Against All Puerto Ricans, chronicles U.S. oppression against the Nationalist movement led by Pedro Albizu Campos. His latest film, Make America Great Again, premiered in October 2018 at the Chelsea Film Festival.
