Former Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning has died
It is with sadness that we share the news from the Diocese of New York of Former Presiding Bishop Browning's death. O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that your servant Edmond, being raised with Him, may know the strength of God's presence, and rejoice in eternal glory; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Rt. Rev. Edmond Lee Browning, the 24th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, was born in Corpus Christi, TX, on March 11, 1929. He attended The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1952, his Bachelor of Divinity in 1954, and his Doctor of Divinity in 1970.
After being ordained, he served as a priest and later bishop in Japan, France, and the United States. He was elected to succeed the Most Reverend John Maury Allin as Presiding Bishop on September 19, 1985. During his twelve year tenure, the Church was shaped by his vision:
There are tremendous global issues that face us all. My hope is that the Church can continue to hold these issues before the full membership, as well as society, to bring about some well-being for all. I think the Church has a role in being both prophetic in holding up issues, and using all its influences to try to bring about better conditions for the poor, the hungry, both in this country as well as in the global village.
He later proclaimed that, "There will be no outcasts in the Church." Indeed, the church saw many changes under his guidance. He was the first Presiding Bishop to observe an AIDS Day of Prayer, established a Refugee/Migration Ministries unit at the Episcopal Church Center, and consecrated the Rev. Barbara Harris as the first female bishop in The Episcopal Church and in the Anglican Communion.
He died in Oregon, at the age of 87 on July 11, 2016.
Bishop Browning was married to Patricia Alline Sparks in 1953. They had five children: Mark, Philip, Paige, Peter, John.
Details on services are forthcoming.
