West Yard and 3rd Street Preschool
Over the winter two school groups have been working hard to make the West Yard more beautiful. In January 3rd Street Preschool, across the street, asked if they could set up a small garden project in the West Yard. Some of the parents and teachers are very experienced gardeners, working with community gardens in the neighborhood as well. We talked and they planned and Saturday over 110 parents and children worked in shifts from 9:30-4:30 to clean up, organize, replant, and sow seeds for pumpkin, sunflower, and vegetables.
Since September three or four students from Manhattan School for Career Development have come to the West Yard every Friday morning for two hours, receiving both school credit and some payment from the school. They've been raking and cleaning, making bird houses and stepping stones, and discovering bugs and new muscles with supervision from Jeannine, Allison, and Jimmy. The goal is to prepare students with a variety of learning challenges for meaningful, fairly well-paying work.
Signs of resurrection indeed!
