In his talk, Jaap Jacobs will explore the role slavery played in the life and times of Petrus Stuyvesant, whose career with the Dutch West India Company lasted over thirty years and included stints in Dutch Brazil, the Caribbean islands, as well as New Amsterdam. In Stuyvesant’s life slavery played a significant role. Jacobs’ talk will focus on the context and motives of Stuyvesant’s involvement with the system of slavery, both as a Company official and in a private capacity.
Jaap Jacobs (PhD Leiden, 1999) is currently working on a biography of Petrus Stuyvesant.
